Speaking: Balance & Polish Your Answer
A good answer states a position and supports it. A great answer also acknowledges the other side. This is what separates a Band 6 from a Band 7+ — especially in Part 3, where examiners expect you to think beyond your own experience and reason like a citizen.
Step 5 — Contrast
Use these when you want to introduce a different or opposing point. You do not have to agree with the other side — you just need to show you are aware it exists.
Soft contrast — slightly different angle
Phrase | Example |
|---|---|
That said… | The situation is serious. That said, I do think things are slowly getting better. |
Having said that… | Social media has many negatives. Having said that, I can see why billions of people still use it every day. |
Even so… | The plan has several weaknesses. Even so, I think it is still better than doing nothing at all. |
At the same time… | We need economic growth. At the same time, we cannot ignore the damage it causes to the environment. |
You know… | It's a complicated issue. You know, not everyone sees it the same way. |
Strong contrast — clear opposite point
Phrase | Example |
|---|---|
However… | City life is convenient and exciting. However, the cost of living is extremely high for most people. |
On the other hand… | Working from home saves commuting time. On the other hand, it can make people feel isolated and unmotivated. |
Although… | Although social media helps people stay connected, it also creates unrealistic expectations about life. |
Even though… | Even though crime rates have dropped in recent years, many people still feel unsafe walking alone at night. |
While / Whereas… | Cities offer convenience and opportunity. Whereas the countryside offers peace, clean air, and a slower pace of life. |
In contrast… | Older generations tend to save money carefully. In contrast, younger people today are more likely to spend on experiences. |
Step 6 — Polish with opinion depth
Once you have shown both sides, close your argument with a deeper, more personal layer. This is what makes your answer memorable.
Feeling — show genuine emotion
Phrase | Example |
|---|---|
To be honest, I feel that… | To be honest, I feel that people seriously underestimate how difficult it is to learn a new language. |
It makes me feel… | Seeing animals mistreated makes me feel genuinely angry and helpless at the same time. |
I find it quite… | I find it quite sad that so many people prioritise work over family and meaningful relationships. |
Personally, I find it… | Personally, I find it fascinating how different cultures approach the exact same problems in completely different ways. |
What concerns me is… | What concerns me is that younger generations are growing up without knowing how to be bored — and that matters. |
What excites me is… | What excites me is how quickly clean energy technology is advancing around the world. |
Conclusion — wrap your argument
Phrase | Example |
|---|---|
So overall… | So overall, I think the benefits of technology outweigh the drawbacks, at least for now. |
All things considered… | All things considered, I believe city life suits me better at this stage of my life. |
In the end… | In the end, it comes down to personal choice and what you value most. |
At the end of the day… | At the end of the day, people just want to feel safe and financially stable. |
